UNEMPLOYMENT IN WELLINGBOROUGH: SIXTH HIGHEST RISE IN WHOLE OF UK UNDER LABOUR
Peter Bone, Member of Parliament for Wellingborough and Rushden has learnt today (Tuesday 22 April) of the worrying new unemployment figures for the Wellingborough Constituency.
At the end of March this year there were 3,239 unemployed in Wellingborough. At the end of March 1997, there were 1938 people unemployed in Wellingborough. Unemployment in the local area has risen by over two thirds in the last 12 years and Wellingborough has the sixth highest increase in unemployment since 1997 in the whole country.
Mr Bone says: ‘These figures are extremely concerning. Let us remember, we are not just talking about statistics here – we are talking about families who are really suffering in a very difficult economic climate.
‘I listened to the Budget today hoping to hear something positive that the Government would be doing to tackle this rising unemployment but there was nothing.
‘It is disgraceful that so many people in Wellingborough are unemployed and yet the Government is burying its head in the sand.
‘I will be questioning the Chancellor tomorrow during the continuation of the budget debate. I will also be bringing up the plight of local businesses that are not getting any help from this Government. There are many successful and well established businesses in the constituency which are struggling only due to the recession. It is unacceptable that the Government has turned a blind eye to them.’
