Reform-led North Northamptonshire Council has already increased Council Tax by 4.99%, the maximum allowed. At the same time, NNC ran a parking consultation in September 2025.
The consultation responses were clear: car parking should remain free in Wellingborough and Rushden; new charges would harm High Street areas; and introducing tariffs could push parking onto surrounding streets.
Reform-led NNC draft Car Parking Strategy released in September 2026 explicitly says its “key change” is introducing charges in areas that are currently free.
In Wellingborough, both Jacksons Lane and the Multi-Storey Car Park are proposed for Band A charging - up to £10 for more than six hours.
In Rushden, Duck Street, John Street, Rectory Road, Portland Street and North Street are proposed for charges of up to £4 for more than six hours.
Our high streets are already under pressure. Reform must listen, act transparently, and protect our town centres from unnecessary parking charges.
