Biography

Peter was born in Billericay in Essex in 1952 and was educated at Westcliff High School for Boys. Peter qualified as a chartered accountant in 1977 and is now a fellow of the Institute of Charted Accountants in England and Wales. He successfully ran both a public company and family businesses before entering Parliament.

Peter has three children: Alex who is wingcommander in the RAF, Helen who is a teacher and Thomas who is studying at Edinburgh University.

Peter lives in Irchester, part of the Wellingborough constituency, and is heavily involved in the local community. The Listening to Wellingborough and Rushden Campaign was founded by Peter in 2001. This campaign has allowed Peter to effectively listen to the views of constituents, campaign on the issues that concern them and deliver the results they need.

Having first been elected in 2005, Peter was re-elected in 2010, 2015, 2017 and 2019. Peter has consistently increased his majority, culminating in the largest ever Conservative share of the vote for the Wellingborough constituency in 2019.

A former Councillor and School Governor, Peter is also a former voluntary board member of Rockingham Forest Housing Association and a former member of Saint Mary’s Rushden Parochial Church Council. He has a huge interest in the local community and works hard to listen and represent local people.

A keen sportsman, Peter has played cricket for a local team and is a member of Wellingborough Golf Club. Peter has run the London Marathon nine times, raising thousands of pounds for charities including Crimestoppers, the British Heart Foundation, and the local St John Ambulance. Peter is currently the Chairman of the All Party-Parliamentary Group for American Football.

Peter was a founding member of the Grassroots Out campaign, working cross-party to campaign for Britain to leave the European Union. He was a leading voice in the campaign to leave the European Union and played a key role in delivering a true Brexit by defying the Whip and voting down Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreement in 2019. He is one of the so-called ‘Spartans’.

Peter is a member of the Panel of Chairs, which he was first appointed to in 2010. He is also currently serving as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Advisory Group on Modern Slavery and the Supply Chain. Appointed to this role by the Speaker of the House of Commons, this comes as a result of Peter’s persistent campaigning on the issue of human trafficking and modern slavery. Peter was formerly Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Human Trafficking and has been a vocal advocate for the victims of this evil crime
